New Delhi:  Colours dominate our visually saturated environment, encompassing every area of our lives, from the clothing we wear to the places we visit. While we generally think of colours as purely aesthetic choices, their influence on our mental and emotional states is significant and far-reaching. The vibrant hues of Holi carry more than just colourful revelry – they offer a vivid lens into how different shades can influence our overall wellbeing.

Dr Chandni Tugnait shares how different colours can provide a strong tool for building emotional balance, focus, and mental well-being –

    1. Psychological impact: Our perception of colour is the result of an intricate mix of biological, cultural, and personal elements that influence our emotional responses. For example, while red is commonly linked with energy and passion, it can also elicit feelings of aggressiveness or anxiety in particular people or situations. Blue, while often associated with calmness and serenity, can also provoke feelings of sadness or melancholy. These inconsistent responses emphasize the necessity of comprehending the multidimensional nature of colour psychology.
    2. Chromatic balancing act: Our emotional well-being thrives when we surround ourselves with a harmonious palette of colours. For example, introducing warm tones like orange and yellow into a largely cool-toned space can generate a sense of invigorating vibrancy, while using muted shades like sage green or lavender can infuse a relaxing, grounding effect in an otherwise lively atmosphere.
    3. Power of personal associations: While there are basic patterns in how colours affect our emotions, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of personal associations and experiences. The colours that have the most substantial emotional impact on us are frequently associated with beloved memories, cultural traditions, or deeply ingrained symbolic meanings. For example, someone who associates purple with a favourite childhood toy may feel nostalgic and comfortable when surrounded by it. In contrast, someone raised in a culture that reveres green as a symbol of growth and renewal may feel optimistic in the presence of that colour. By tapping into our associations, we may use colour to generate specific emotional states and create spaces that promote our mental health.

While colours have an unquestionable impact on mental health, they must be used with intention and attention. Just as a doctor would carefully evaluate the optimal dosage and combination of pharmaceuticals, we should intentionally curate the colours in our surroundings to promote our intended emotional states.

Shades of blue and green can induce relaxation and concentration in the workplace, which might help those who want to improve their focus and productivity. Individuals suffering from stress or anxiety may benefit from the soothing presence of soft pastels or earthy tones, whilst those wanting to stimulate creativity and inspiration should surround themselves with brilliant hues such as fuchsia or tangerine.

The goal is to experiment with different colour combinations and see how they affect your mood, energy level, and general sense of well-being. The kaleidoscope of Holi becomes a symbolic renaissance, reawakening the vibrancy within.
