The pressure around self-discovery has quietly become one of the more exhausting parts of modern life. At some point, we started treating identity like a checklist, career sorted, relationship status confirmed, personality type identified, coffee order decided. Everything needs a label, and everyone seems to expect you to know exactly which box you belong in, all the time, with total confidence.

But according to Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, Coach and Healer that is simply not how real life works. “Most people I meet, including my clients, regardless of age, are still figuring themselves out and that’s not a flaw. That’s the actual process of being human and living life on your own terms.”

Why We Reach For Labels During Self-Discovery

Labels are not the problem, Dr Tugnait explains. They give us language, a sense of belonging, and a way to explain ourselves to other people without having to start from zero every single time. “Identifying with a label, a community, or a defined sense of self can be deeply grounding,” she says.

But the trouble begins when a label stops being a tool and starts feeling like a cage. “When you feel like you can’t grow, change, or contradict yourself because you’ve already decided who you are, that’s when the label starts working against you,” she explains. A lot of people hold onto outdated versions of themselves not because it still fits, but because changing feels like admitting they were wrong. “Changing doesn’t mean you made a flawed choice. It simply means you were growing.”

Why Self-Discovery Is Not A Single Moment

Most of us imagine self-discovery as one big dramatic moment of clarity, the day it all finally clicks. Dr Tugnait says the reality looks nothing like that. “Self-discovery is closer to a slow, ongoing conversation with yourself that shifts as your experiences shift,” she explains.

The person you were at twenty is allowed to look completely different from the person you are at thirty. Interests change. Values get quietly reordered. Things that once felt central to who you are start to fade, and new ones take their place. “None of this means you were lying to yourself earlier. It simply means you were growing,” she adds.

The Pressure To Have Self-Discovery Figured Out

Social media has made this considerably harder to sit with. Everyone online seems to have a clear, confident narrative about exactly who they are, their aesthetic, their type, their five-year plan laid out neatly in a caption. Dr Tugnait points out that this creates a misleading picture. “It creates an illusion that uncertainty is unusual, when really it’s the norm. Not having a clear answer to who you are or what you want doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It often just means you’re being honest instead of performing a certainty you don’t actually feel.”

The Quiet Courage Self-Discovery Actually Requires

There is something genuinely brave about simply admitting you do not have it figured out yet and Dr Tugnait believes that admission is where real self-discovery actually begins. “You stop trying to look certain for everyone else’s comfort. You give yourself room to want different things at once stability and spontaneity, ambition and rest, connection and time alone, without rushing to sort it all out.”

Self-discovery, she emphasises, is not about landing on one fixed, final version of yourself. “It’s about getting okay with the fact that you’re allowed to change.

As Dr Tugnait puts it simply, “You don’t owe anyone, including yourself, a finished version of who you are. Labels can help you communicate, but they were never meant to limit your growth. It’s okay to be in progress. In fact, that’s probably the most honest place most of us are actually standing.”
