Not every relationship is meant to last forever, and accepting that is one of the most honest things you can do for yourself. People change, priorities shift, and sometimes the version of you that exists today simply has different needs from the one that formed a particular friendship or relationship years ago. That doesn’t make either person wrong; it simply makes you both human.

Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M.), Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, Coach & Healer, Founder & Director, Gateway of Healing, shares why it’s okay to outgrow people:

Growth doesn’t require an explanation: When you outgrow someone, you don’t owe them or anyone else, a detailed justification for why the connection no longer works. Sometimes there’s no falling out, no single moment that broke things, just a gradual realisation that you’ve both moved in directions that no longer overlap.

Guilt doesn’t mean you were wrong: Feeling guilty about outgrowing someone usually means you genuinely cared about them, which is actually a sign of being a good person, not a selfish one. But guilt and obligation are two different things. Staying in a relationship purely because leaving feels uncomfortable doesn’t serve either person. It simply keeps both of you from finding connections that truly align with who you are today.

Not all relationships are permanent: Some people come into your life for a specific season, and they do exactly what they were meant to do during that time. The friendships that got you through college or the people who stood by you during a difficult phase mattered. The fact that you’ve grown beyond that chapter doesn’t diminish what those relationships gave you. It simply means the chapter has ended, which is exactly how chapters are meant to work.

Letting go creates space: Holding on to relationships that have run their course often leaves very little room for the ones that are truly meant for the person you’re becoming. Letting go, when it comes from an honest place, isn’t about rejection—it’s about making space for growth.
