Holi is more than just colours! Explore 5 practical ways to celebrate Holi this year with a focus on mindfulness and inner peace. From eco-friendly colours to creating genuine connections, discover a more meaningful and joyful festival experience.

New Delhi: Holi, the festival of colours, arrives, bringing an infectious atmosphere of joy, regeneration, and celebration. While the traditional revelries of water balloons and colour powder are deeply embedded in the fabric of this ancient Hindu festival, there is an opportunity to take a more mindful approach that honours Holi’s deeper spiritual significance while encouraging personal growth and environmental consciousness.

Dr Chandni Tugnait shares 5 ways to mindfully celebrate Holi this year.

    1. Cultivate inner radiance: Holi represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. Aside from the visible displays of colour, this festival asks us to awaken the inner light that exists within each of us. As you prepare for the festivities, take a moment of quiet introspection to identify the metaphorical shadows that may be blocking your inner light, such as negative thought patterns, limiting beliefs, or emotional baggage. Then, actively choose to let go of these burdens, enabling the brilliant colours of joy, self-acceptance, and inner peace to flood your spirit.

    2. Embrace sustainable celebration: While the typical use of synthetic colours and water balloons contributes to the joyful spirit, it also has a substantial environmental impact. This year, try taking a more sustainable approach by using natural, plant-based colours obtained from sources such as turmeric, beetroot, and spinach. These eco-friendly options are not only mild on the environment, but they also have symbolic meaning, linking you to mother nature’s nurturing embrace. Alternatively, you could use biodegradable, seed-infused paper confetti to transform your event into a living canvas that will eventually bloom into new life.
    3. Encourage community connections: Holi is a celebration that bridges personal barriers, bringing together people from all walks of life in unity and shared excitement. Consider broadening your celebration circle this year by reaching out to those in your community who may be alone or marginalized. Invite them to participate in the festivities and create an inclusive environment in which everyone may bask in the vibrant colours of acceptance and belonging.
    4. Nourish the body and soul: While the festivities are frequently focused on amazing treats and delicacies, Holi also provides an opportunity to nurture your body and soul via thoughtful practices. Consider incorporating a yoga session or guided meditation into your festivities, enabling the festival’s lively energy to infuse your practice with new vibrancy and enjoyment. You may choose to delve into the world of Ayurvedic cuisine, creating colourful, nutrient-dense foods that honour the ancient philosophy of holistic wellness while tempting your taste buds with seasonally appropriate flavours.
    5. Explore creative expression: Colours have long inspired artists, writers, and creative individuals to express their inner thoughts via a variety of mediums. Embrace this artistic attitude by hosting a collaborative art project in your community. Gather friends and family to paint a mural together, write vivid poetry, or design a dance performance that honours your society’s varied cultures and traditions.

As you immerse yourself in the beauty of colours and rituals that define Holi, remember that true celebration is found not only in outward displays but also in the thoughtful cultivation of inner joy, compassion, and mindfulness. By adopting these insightful ways, you can turn this day into a meaningful journey of personal growth, community building, and environmental stewardship – one that extends well beyond the confines of a single day and leaves an indelible mark on your life.
