Dating culture is changing rapidly, and according to a new survey, Gen Z singles are increasingly prioritising emotional honesty, loyalty, and authenticity over appearances and superficial connections.

A recent study by Tinder revealed that 64% of young singles believe emotional honesty is the most important thing missing from modern dating today. Additionally, 73% said they only truly like someone when they feel comfortable being completely themselves around that person.
Modern dating apps have made meeting people easier than ever, but they have also introduced trends like ghosting, benching, and roster dating, making the experience emotionally exhausting for many users. Experts say this has led younger generations to rethink how they approach relationships.
According to relationship expert Dr. Chandni Tugnait, ‘performative dating’ happens when people present polished or exaggerated versions of themselves to appear more attractive or acceptable.   This can include: Experts believe this behaviour often stems from pressure, identity uncertainty, and fear of rejection. The survey found a major shift in dating priorities among young singles: Instead of rushing emotional intimacy, many Gen Z daters now prefer building trust gradually and focusing on emotional compatibility before opening up deeply.
The report also highlighted several growing dating trends among younger users: Experts say healthy, non-performative relationships are built on consistency, emotional safety, and honesty rather than constant impression management. Young daters are increasingly choosing connections where they can feel relaxed, authentic, and emotionally understood instead of trying to ‘perform’ perfection. Relationship experts recommend: As dating culture evolves, Gen Z appears to be pushing for more meaningful, emotionally honest relationships over superficial attraction and social media perfection.
