Visiting a partner’s house for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you’re trying to make a good impression. Priyanka Chopra’s account of visiting Nick Jonas’ home for the first time offers an insight into the pressure one feels.

In a 2019 interview with The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, she said, “Everything in Nick Jonas’ house is immaculate, like his alarms work.” “When I went to Nick’s house to stay there, it would make me so nervous…when something is super clean, and you take off your shoes, it just bothers you. His house is immaculate. So, my dog peed in his car on the first day. It is a white carpet, too. Before he came home, I can’t tell you, I went through everything…cleaners, baking soda…like scrubbing with serious elbow grease…got it out…but he still noticed.”

This candid confession offers a glimpse into how first impressions can be overwhelming. “In her case, despite the warm and welcoming atmosphere, it’s natural to feel the pressure of wanting to make everything go perfectly. For many, first impressions can either set the tone for a lasting connection or cause unease,” said Dr Chandni Tugnait, psychotherapist, coach, and healer, and founder and director of Gateway of Healing. Shift your focus from perfection to authenticity: Often, the desire to impress leads us to overthink every detail, focusing on perfection. “However, being authentic can take the pressure off. By letting go of trying to be perfect, you allow your true self to shine, which creates genuine connections,” said Dr Tugnait. Break the ice with shared interests: When entering a new space, especially your partner’s, having a shared topic of interest or experience can serve as a great icebreaker. “Finding a relatable subject, whether it’s a hobby, movie, or even something simple like a favorite food, can help ease any awkwardness and build rapport quickly,” said Dr. Tugnait. Manage expectations: It’s easy to walk into a new situation with high expectations, which can lead to unnecessary pressure. Dr. Tugnait said realizing that first impressions are just that can help in managing anxiety. “You don’t have to leave with a perfect moment,” said Dr. Tuganit. Give yourself time to adapt: Getting used to new surroundings takes time. With time, the nerves settle, and you begin to feel more at home. “Adapting to a new space, especially when it involves meeting your partner’s family or friends, is a process that doesn’t need to be rushed,” said Dr. Tugnait. relationships First impressions can be daunting, but they don’t have to define your relationship with your partner’s family or new surroundings. Remember that adapting to a new environment is a process, and with time, any initial discomfort will fade. “Just like Priyanka Chopra’s experience, accepting the moment and being true to yourself can turn a nervous first visit into a genuine connection,” said Dr. Tugnait.
