Every year ahead of January 1, people around the world fervently pen down their resolutions in an attempt towards making a self-promise for a better new year. From promising to take better care of one’s health, towards giving up on bad habits, or even tall claims of becoming a millionaire, the resolutions are plenty. But how many of us manage to stick to what we promised?

Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M) Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, Coach & Healer, Founder & Director, Gateway of Healing says most people are unable to keep their resolutions due to lack of time, resources or motivation, or a loss in zing after starting, boredom, change in priorities, etc. “Research shows that only about 16-18% of people are actually able to keep their resolutions. Most others quit within one to six weeks of starting and often these are the same resolutions, year after year. We need to focus on rewiring the brain to build better habits, a solid system and a deeper transformation,” she explains.

Here are some ways in which you can keep your New Year Resolutions according to Dr Chandni Tugnait:

    Seat realistic resolutions

Often, we set extremely hard goals that soon seem unattainable or set easy ones that we soon get bored with. Examine your resolutions – Are they realistic, measurable, time-bound, specific&aligned with your vision? Can they be broken into tiny steps? In order to stick to a resolution, one needs to bring changes in behaviour and hence it is essential to set realistic ones.

    Add accountability

Work with a coach, mentor or accountable partner to ensure you are surrounded with the right energy and motivation to be more, do more and have more. Success is a science and hence when we follow the system, we get results.

    Review progress

A weekly or fortnightly review helps one to monitor one’s progress and convert the excuses into possibilities. What gets measured, gets done and what gets done can be improvised and be built into a habit through an effective tracking system in place.

    Effective planning

Planning around the resolution, breaking it into smaller steps and scheduling on the calendar makes our resolve a reality. Bite-sized weekly goals give a sense of achievement and one doesn’t end up procrastinating. Planning ensures that all the changes that would be needed are mapped out in advance, with awareness of anticipated challenges.

    Self-belief

Don’t let past failures control your present. Learn from your mistakes and then get into action mode. Celebrate every small achievement as that propels you forward for the big ones. Being self-critical or being in self-doubt doesn’t contribute as that directs all the focus and energy towards disappointment. Practice gratitude, compassion and love for self as your progress and don’t let a small delay or disappointment amount to a permanent failure.

    Have a clear “why”

Most people fail in their goals because of an unclear ‘why’. The ‘why’ is what propels people towards actions and results. You may know what you want, but you will only be able to figure out the ‘how’ once the ‘why’ is in place. So why do you want to keep these resolutions? What is your driving force? What is the emotional connection with your ‘why’? When the purpose is strong, all excuses fade away and one naturally shifts from a fixed mindset to that of growth.

And finally, Dr Chandni Tugnait concludes by saying. “Be mindful, take responsibility, stay committed and direct all focus on the alignment of energy, mindset and action in order to stick to one’s New Year resolutions. Start with a picture of your future self in your mind; make the image big and bright, feel it deeply and hold onto it as a daily reminder. Don’t be too hard or too easy on self and most importantly, enjoy the process of change and transformation.”
